Looks like Scheelhaase is off to a pretty good start. Many on this board, myself not included, complained that we have recently hired unproven (on field and recruiting) coaches. They feel we need to attract more experienced and proven candidates. I tend to agree. If/when Scheelhaase is more...

Obviously, this comment/question is not a response to Olaf's post. Meant it to be addressed to all in the know.

I don't quite get the fascination with Nathan Scheelhaase. I'm a big fan of his both as a person and an Illini. That said, he's new to the coaching profession and I see nothing in his bio that screams superstar recruiter, etc. Is it his Illini background that makes him so appealing? Please...

Not too disappointed to hear Butkus is leaving. Bellow average recruiter. Hard a** guy who doesn't relate well to today's college player. Believe Recent Oline success has more to do with Coach Rod's system. Think we will be better off in the end.

Two buddies and I sneaked into House of Chin our senior year in high school. One proceeded to throw up all over the table we were at. We beat a hasty retreat. On a side note. Got to know Eddie Chin in high school as we both played tennis for our schools. He was a good tennis player and an...

Undergrad from '70 to '74. Lived in ISR my freshman year. Campus life was less sophisticated and more volatile back then. Students who didn't live in dorms or Greek houses squatted in old houses spread around campus. There was a anti war riot in the spring of '71 during which just about...

We called them "the dings". Had a frat brother who was a junior who suddenly started playing the dings at Dooleys most of the day, every day. Left school at the end of the semester. Guess he'd had enough. Moved to Texas, got married and went to work. Has done quite well.

I don't know if students today realize what a truly great "community" and bar scene there was back in the day. Illinois bars were a big draw for students and young people in general from not only other state schools but out of state as well. I met girls in Dooleys from all over the place...

Didn't Vito have to leave school after having some sort of run in with a student. Memory fails but something went on that caused his early departure.

Yep. Bonaparte's. Opened up sometime after I graduated. Went there a couple of times. Nothing special. Didn't last long. Place that sold the fish sandwiches was The Deluxe. Good bar with pool table or two as I remember.

I understand that this is about building a winning program. I not close to the situation and don't have the inside info you have. That said, color me skeptical when he professes the need to be closer to his daughter. That seems like a convenient ploy which bothers me as a father.

Second Chance was built on the site of the Brown Jug (after it burned down). The Jug was something to see. Dark as night inside with fake stain glass lighting here and there around the walls. Big dance floor surrounded by tables and chairs. Served cheap draft beer and Boones Farm apple wine...

Born in Kankakee in '52. Moved to central Illinois in '63. Hard to be pulled away from all my buddies. Became an Illini fan to fill the void. Remember listening to the '64 Rose Bowl on the radio. You can't imagine today how little Illini gear was available back then. Mom bought me a regular...

Yep. CR had big picture on the wall of the New Colony Six. Went to a wet T-shirt contest in the late '70s or early '80s that got real crazy. May have had something to do with its closing. As for other bars, Red Lion, Dooleys, Whitt's End and The Brown Jug. Favorite local band was The Light...
