Always a toss up between NHL and NFL for the league worst at hiring coaches.

Even if none of the transfers get waivers to play, Lovie needs to win 6 next year. There are four extremely winnable games on the schedule. That means they need to take 2 from the slate of Nebraska, @Minny, Wisconsin, @Purdue, Northwestern. I don't think this team can beat Michigan at home or...

Agree here. He has slot receiver/corner and KR/PR written all over him

Yeah. Our Illini are going to get thoroughly shellacked.

Nebraska has a high powered offense with the type of QB Illinois hasn't been able to figure out. Offense will have to have a big day and the defense will have to play assignment sound if they want to have a chance.

You can blame a fair amount of offensive explosion and a terrible 3rd down conversion rate for the TOP numbers. This team either breaks a 40-yd TD run or goes 3 and out. Not great for TOP numbers.

    Week 8 Games

Mental mistakes, the wrong QB, and very conservative offensive and defensive playcalling. whoa. That sounds familiar.

Winnable, but I don't think that's how it will end up.

Don't get me wrong, I'm on the fence with Lovie too. He'll get one more year no matter what...the buyout is just too high. But did this game really move the needle for any of you? I understand Purdue on Homecoming, but this was a team we haven't beaten in a decade...at their house...with 5...

Shame that the one ridiculously bad luck game every team has per year comes on the one day the defense looks not miserable.

Score and get the ball back. A field goal is plenty, just move the ball to get some momentum. Stick with MJ.

That was a miserable throw by AJ. And to his credit, at least he's trying to take something away from the superior team by just loading up the box. In the past, we've seen them content to just sit in base and get mauled. Provided the team doesn't quit in the game, I'm going to leave this week...

It IS possible to run the cover 2 as a base defense with some wrinkles. It's crystal clear this team won't win another game (or probably even stay close) playing the vanilla Cover 2. Even if you don't change the scheme, flex it a little bit. That's really all we're asking for at this point.

The problem is that fans are tired of the collective shoulder shrugs from the staff in the middle of season 3. Those show in multiple ways, some of which are entirely reasonable—others not so much. 1. The typical calm and cool Lovie won’t ever reflect fan frustration after a game. And that...

Pregame: Illinois at Wisconsin, Saturday, October 20th, 11:00am CT, FS1

Illinois loses, but it’ll be closer than today’s miserable failure. Wisconsin isn’t explosive enough to score like Purdue, and I don’t think the offense has a performance this poor again all year. Roll with Rivers. I know the WR corps is bad, but AJ isn’t making the right reads AND he’s a bad...

So many things in this game that leave a bad taste in my mouth. 1. Beckman-esque discipline and preparation 2. Total defensive inflexibility. Apparently Hardy/Lovie are going to sink with their system, despite the fact there are probably 15 teams in the league talented enough to make it work...

Pregame: Illinois vs Purdue, Saturday, October 13th, 2:30pm CT, FS1

If Illinois beats Purdue, this team can win six. But they haven't shown me enough to convince me they can accomplish either of those. That secondary shakeup (which I LOVE) is the X-Factor this week—and the rest of the season really. Brown is faster, a better coverage guy and a surer tackler...

Can't see a win here. Helps that Blough isn't much of a threat on the ground, and I'm pretty excited about the re-org in the secondary...those are really smart moves in my book. But the pass rush still won't be there, we'll be in a Nickel package most of the time, and DJ Knox is pretty...

Pregame: Illinois at Rutgers, Saturday, October 6th, 11:00am CT, BTN

That's one of the things that kills me about Lovie/Hardy's defense. They play with two REALLY high safeties at almost all times, which means there should be a guy to prevent the big play even if the blitz doesn't hit in time.

This defense has HUGE problems, and they’re not all due to lack of maturity/skill. As some have mentioned, the LBs and DEs (though Roundtree got way better as game went on) are committing way too early on the read option. Like, WAY too early. Add that to a bend-but-don’t-break scheme that will...
