    Alma Otter / Champ Mascot

IMO, there's a real difference between a mascot and a symbol. Mascots don't have to be symbols, and don't have to replace symbols. They can be mutually exclusive. Purdue Pete, Brutus, etc. etc. They're not the "symbol" of their respective school - more so fun way to celebrate the school at...

Pregame: Illinois vs Northwestern, Sunday, March 3rd, 5:30pm CT, BTN

agreed. some of that goes to the fans and them helping make SFC a difficult place to play. I have to say I was disappointed in the at the penn state game. I fully understand where we've been the past decade and the obvious implications of that for fans. But even the Krush was not nearly as...

anyone notice how BU was about to put underwood in and then changed his mind when AG made that three? thought that was interesting.

    Illinois 95, Minnesota 68 POSTGAME

Might be over-thinking this, but I felt that BU's demeanor was much calmer and subdued last night than typical. Even when the lead wasn't huge, lots of firm but calm coaching and sitting on the bench for him. More so than the past.

https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/alan-griffin-1.html https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/tyler-underwood-1.html I’ll say again I disagree with BU’s approach. But 1) this is not nearly as big of an issue as 11 pages of this thread indicates and 2) its not as outfight...

    Missouri 79, Illinois 63 POSTGAME

I can't believe this TU thing has turned into such a big issue Looking at advanced stats, him and AG are not that far apart. AG is a +3.6, TU is a +3.3. BU is right, TU is light years ahead of AG in defense (+5.1 TU vs +2.0 AG) but TU is light years behind in offense. I'm not saying I agree...

    Illini Basketball 2018-2019

Last post on this from me - since it's off topic. Also because I'm going to choose to refrain from furthering one of your pedantic debates you seem to enjoy so much on this board. I suggest you reread my original post. You can call out all the application stats, tuition cost, etc. etc. info you...

    Illini Basketball 2018-2019

I may have inferred something in what he said that I shouldn't have. But disagree with everything else you've said. I can call out as many, if not more, anecdotal exceptions as you can. Penn state grew it's endowment massively under JoePa. Sure, you can say athletics played a meaningful role...

    Illini Basketball 2018-2019

I love Illinois athletics. It's the only "team" I'm truly a fan of (as opposed to casually watching and cheering for and/or just watching for entertainment purposes). But to say that a school's crappy athletic program can be extended as a direct reflection of its academic program (or vice a...

I would agree, except our best offensive stretch in this game was when TF was on the bench.

    Illinois 99, Evansville 60 POSTGAME

I was going to post a link to the classic "hot hand fallacy" as a reason why BU and other coaches likely don't change their sub patterns based on how many shots a player has made. Then I ran across this article that may indicate that they may a bit wrong in doing so. Not definitive but...

    Maryland scandal

if they retained him for financial reasons initially, they might be in big trouble now. If they try to fire him for cause, he can easily come back and say that it wasn't. Either some boosters come in and pay up, or they might be hamstrung for a while.

    Maryland scandal

Probably shouldn't have come out an accepted responsibility outright early on like they did if that was the case :noidea: Or did the financial impact of sizable settlements also play into the equation on whether to keep him? Either way, truly the wrong decision. So many coaches have been fired...

    Game Thread: Illinois at Maryland

I really hope Lovie doesn't say the "we're better than our record" line after this game. I know he isn't much for emotion on the sideline, and that's fine, but I also don't want to hear that anymore. There are serious problems with this squad. I'm not smart enough to football to know if it's...

Mark Smith cleared to play for Missouri this season

Has this type of situation happened before? I'm guessing it isn't the first time a player claimed mistreatment to get a waiver and got it. Is the NCAA not obligated to investigate and verify (I know, I'm probably giving them too much credit)? If this was true (and I'm sure it isn't), then isn't...

Mark Smith cleared to play for Missouri this season

As has been discussed before, he got plenty of paying time. Comparable time to all the guards except Trent. Probably less later in the season, but he had his chances. Conclude from that what you will.

G League to offer $125K to elite prospects as alternative to one-and-done route

Not sure how it's "no cost." They're paying 10's if not 100's of millions for contracts with NCAA schools. Under Armor paid UCLA alone close to $19M last year for apparel rights. I think most of that is gonna stay there, but at least some will likely be diverted if they can get big name players...

G League to offer $125K to elite prospects as alternative to one-and-done route

Well, looks like all our theorizing and debating is about to be tested. $125k + (more importantly) full time focus on bball + endoresements/agents = seems like a good deal to me for high level players. Should be interesting... As part of a newly formed "professional path" starting in the summer...

    FBI College Basketball Corruption Investigation

If you really think that a vast majority of the young adults that are seriously in consideration for being drafted right out of high school (and, as i stated, that's something they'll know well before they declare for the draft) are seriously interested/motivated in spending 4 yrs in college to...

    FBI College Basketball Corruption Investigation

I think you're over-dramatizing this a bit, no? Kids make these types of decisions every day. I don't see it as that different from deciding if/when/where to go to college. By "people around the player" i primarily mean the parents. I don't think it's invalid to say that they theoretically...

    FBI College Basketball Corruption Investigation

If a player (and, just as importantly, the people around the player) think it's worth the risk/reward to try to go pro even if they may or may not be ready, that should be left to them, imo. It shouldn't be dictated by the NBA (esp. when it's obvious the NBA has an obvious conflict of interest...

Judging by how nebraska is playing, I'm beginning to think that's very winnable. They're just getting destroyed by michigan...it's embarassing...after losing two games they should've won. USF 25, Illinois 19 POSTGAME

That's a tough loss. A really tough one. It seems like USF adjusted in the 2nd half and gashed our defensive secondary. It's our weakness, and they exploited it well. I also think we were a bit too conservative with MJ Rivers. They completely sold out on the run/short pass over and over again...
