Death of Deadspin

Deadspin died last week - real blow to sports journalism on the internet.

Founded by Will Leitch, Mattoon native and UIUC grad. Former EIC was Tommy Craggs, who went to Uni High in Urbana. Had coverage of UI sports pretty much whenever Illini were nationally relevant or interesting, which unfortunately for us hasn’t been too often in the recent past. Eg https://deadspin.com/wisconsins-first-loss-of-the-season-came-at-the-hands-o-1839194850

Deadspin and Loyalty combined for about 60% of my time on the internet. Very sad to see it go. Took an open and often critical and sardonic look at the sports world with news stories from the micro level (individual games, plays) to the macro (franchises, leagues), serious investigative reporting, and discussions of whatever random nonsense was on the minds of the writers. Weren’t afraid to take on anyone, as reflected in the site’s motto - reporting “without access favor or discretion”. Hoping that the contributions of Leitch and Craggs and the other talented staff live on in other publications. In the meantime, I guess I will be mixing in more TCR, Illini Inquirer, ESPN, the Athletic, etc. to fill the gap in my online sports browsing time.

If anyone else is a fan of deadspin and feels like commiserating or has recs on what to read as a substitute, feel free to chime in with your thoughts here.

you feel me, dog?
Elmhurst
The Athletic rocks IMO. $60/year, but a new subscriber discount can be had, quite easily.

As a fellow Deadspin fan, accept no substitutes! There aren't any anyway.
My work days are longer now, but i'm glad they told their bosses (and some choice company over the years) to f off, and i wish them all well. RIP.

I went there frequently. Lots of good articles and enjoyable reads about the world of sport. The inability to stay away from the extreme leftist politics is what ultimately did them in.
