a lot of people confuse activity with accomplishment. Fleck may be one of them. I will be shocked if his schpiel works long term.
He's a good salesman, no question. But Im not sure if there is any there , there.

What does "looks lazy" even mean?
Lovie just gave a press conference talking about how hiring staff takes time and need to go through the process in order to make sure you hire the right people. It took them three months to find a replacement that was already on the staff. Then a coach leaves days after that press conference and they hire a new person in the absolute minimum time allowed by UI hiring practices, hiring a replacement that was already on the staff. If you believe Lovie's speech, this hire looks lazy.

While I somewhat agree, the whole idea of it being one of Rod's "guys" and the tension with Butkus over recruiting and the fact that maybe he didn't mesh with Rod, seems far more likely..........but hey lets all hop aboard the Speculation Express!

It looks to me that our AD has seriously reduced the amount of money in the assistant coach pool. I’m sure that the last few hires have been much less expensive that previous.

Could be. OTOH, I grew up in Cook County, which naturally makes me cynical, so I suspect Lovie's contract stipulates that he gets any funds budgeted towards assistants but not used.

Well, let's look at the whole body of hiring this off-season:
  • DC - Lovie takes over the duties
  • LB Coach - son of Lovie, and assisted by Lovie
  • CB Coach - friend of Austin Clark, was at a Conference USA school
  • RB Coach - alum who was previously on staff as WR Coach and has never coached RBs before, was at a MAC school
  • OL Coach - analyst on staff
  • S&C Coach - previously S&C Coach at IL, was unemployed - did Lovie luck out here, or what?
Lazy might be a strong word, but it sure doesn't look like there was a great effort in searching for replacements, or else Lovie lost many HR recruiting battles. Excepting the nepotism hire, I don't object to any of the other hires. I was just hoping for coaches with more coaching and higher level recruiting experience. I'm sure Bob McClain will do fine, but was there an effort to get someone like Greg Frey?

When Miles Smith was brought, we were told as a fan base that after the season, his temporary spot would be filled by a qualified coach after a full coaching search.

So either Lovie knew he was going to hire his son all along and lied (not good) or during an especially long coaching search, we couldn’t convince one person better than Miles Smith to take the job.

I just can’t see the 2nd option being legitimate. SOMEONE with more experience than Miles that was willing to work within Lovie’s D had to be available.

That hire puts a bit of a shadow on the rest of the hires for me. (Except maybe Bellamy...he was the one head scratcher who didn’t get to stay back when Lovie was hired) It makes me feel like each hire is the path of least resistance.

But, if we win games, all of this talk will go away.

Question: Did we go from the (highly/frequently advertised) staff with the most NFL experience to the staff with the least anything experience??

Big optimist and Lovie fan. But I feel like we got a C- on the overall coaching moves. Not getting a full DC brought us straight to a C grade.
I don’t get why people are upset with not getting a DC. Lovie may just feel he will have a better shot at coaching up and calling his defense his self. He gets to coach the defense up more closely. Lovie trust his system failure or success the defense falls on Lovie and only Lovie. I like that he wants to be held accountable. He knows this season is very important.

its Lovie's pass/fail year. If he feels the D will perform better with him calling the shots, I'm fine with it.
If it works, everyone will want him to keep doing it.
If it doesn't, he will be fired in December
I agree 100%. I think the D will play a lot better this year, solely because of more experience as well as the LB transfer from Washington.
But like someone else on this board said, why didn't he add another top-notch recruiter and call him the DC (in name only)?

For me, it has nothing to do with Lovie calling the D. The bottom line is there were 2 defensive openings. One was open 3 months, and the other 5 months. One also came with a DC title and salary. With those 2 openings (and available salary), Lovie decided to hire his inexperienced son and a CB coach with 2 years mid major experience. It’s not really fair to Keynodo Hudson. On its own, that’s an acceptable hire as a primary recruiter, which is always needed.

Basically things just aren’t adding up. You had literally months to find assistants, and a DC title and new extension to attract coaching talent, or so we were told. Either nobody wanted these jobs (no strong network with Lovie, no stability, too many restrictions from Lovie), the assistant salary pool has drastically decreased, or some combination of both.

With the recently announced hires, I really like Bellamy. Wanted him to stay when Lovie came in originally. Liked Lou from the Zook days, but Zook was also really good at finding high ceiling athletes, even lower ranked guys. Know nothing about the OL coach outside of what I’ve read. But Rod has been in the college game a long time and if this is his guy for OL, I’m in.

Either he is sabotaging himself, or maybe something else.

Yes, we did.

The Miles hire IMO is a huge risk for HC Lovie. The LB position will be highly scrutinized this year because of it. Add in no true DC, concerning.

Bellamy was a good hire.

Hudson will be determined in a couple of years. I think he will be able to recruit.

McClain is getting his chance. He has the knowledge and Rod Smith's backing.

Body by Lou is a great hire. Get those young men tuned up and turned up!

I just want this down for the record. So what if the linebackers play great? Will Miles get credit? This will be a lose lose situation (at least on this board)for Miles. I can see it now, if they play great it was because of Lovie, if they crap the bed and play terrible it'll be Miles fault. Just my 2 cents. I hope they kick !!!! Go ILLINI

Lovie will be assisting with the linebackers. Why would anyone give Miles credit if they play well? Why would Lovie assist with the linebackers if he felt Miles could get them to play well on his own?
