Will I be wowed by hiring Miles? No. Will I be that concerned, Not really. A lot of coaches hire their sons. It's not like he's hired him in as DC (at least I hope not). While I'm sure at least some found them a GA job under another coach for them to appear to work their way up, others probably didn't bother and just brought them under their wing.
Frank Beamer and Steve Spurrier hired their sons. So did Kirk Ferentz, Dennis Erickson, Joe Pa (actually lets not do anything he did)... I take it back DO NOT HIRE MILES SMITH!
But they don't/didn't. They have/had POST-working for dad experience but many of these got their first jobs on the staff of their father.
Beamer's kid: Worked at four different universities before working with his father.
Ferentz's kid: Worked full-time for the Patriots before joining Iowa.
Spurrier's kid: Coached under Stoops in late 90's - early 00's. I've seen a website listing him as the WR coach, others don't list a position.
Erickson's kid: Coached at New Mexico Highlands (D2) for three seasons (two as QBs coach, one as OC) before joining his father.
Paterno's kid: Coached at three different universities before working with his father.
All of them besides Shane Beamer are full-blown nepotism, but each of them has more coaching experience than Miles Smith and were semi-defensible.
