04-05 would destroy this team. Flyin' Illini would destroy this team.
Tough to match the shooting of Dee, Luther, and Deron. However also tough to defend Kofi and probably Foster with their size. Can’t compare with any certainty. Makes for great arguments and conjecture.

25 straight. 25. Twenty five in a row. Not such a great argument.

Stats comparison:
88-89. 04-05
Pts. 86. 77
Fg%. .513. .484
3pt%. .425. .392
Ft%. .703. .728
Ft/gm. 15.9. 12.2
Reb. 37.4. 34.3
TO’s. 13.1. 11.0
Steals. 9.5. 7.4
Blks. 3.0. 3.2

I know I can start an argument here.

And you believe that team had more talent than 1988-89?
I didn't say that. I said nothing even remotely close to that. I simply responded to the question of whether the 25 wins was due to talent or Webber.

Personally, I feel 89 team was the best ever. But those two teams were very different.

We have this argument here about once a year. As great as the 2004-5 team was and as much as I enjoyed watching them, I have no doubt that the '89 Flyin' Illini team would destroy them. That is just my opinion, but it's the correct one :)

There are 2 sides to a basketball game, and the 04-05 team was one of the greatest defensive teams in Illini history.
Point differential per game:
04-05: +15.9
88-89: +12.8

and since 04-05 took more 3pt attempts...
eFG%:
04-05: 56.0%
88-89: 54.2%

I've always felt the level of competition in the BIG was at another level in the late 80s, but have nothing but foggy memories to back that up. Probably has more to do with the style of play than anything, but the athleticism and physical maturity of the 89 team was something to behold. The ball movement is what I always remember most about the 04-05 team. Kofi would have been a nice addition to either team. :)

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I dont do snapchat or instagram ir any social media. Supposedly Kofi posted on snapchat of himself on a plane and then in a Champaign hotel room

I agree as I believe talent level on 88-89 was unbelievable good. 04-05 was the best team in terms of passing. I also thought they shot better than 88-89 and was surprised the stats didn’t bear that out. They bought into the coaches philosophy and were very consistent. Very different teams, but both great to watch unless you were not an Illini fan.

It should be noted that Kendall Gill missed 12 games that season with a foot injury. According to sports reference, he was a 45% 3 point shooter, 61% efg for the year. Might have skewed some of the numbers that favor the 04-05 team.

I would think the Dee/Deron group was a better shooting team also. The 89 team did get a lot of easy baskets off their press. Both were a joy to watch, but I’d give the edge to the 89 team with their team athleticism and quickness. Their size and quickness eliminated most mismatches on defense.

Dee Brown's speed and quickness...generational, Powell, Head and Augie's athleticism nothing to sneeze at. Williams and Ingram's basketball IQ very prominent. Both teams were phenomenal and fortunate to witness. If Ayo and Kofi return with deep bench possibilities are endless. Go Illini !!!

Would be interesting to see the results of simulating 100 games between 89 and 05 Illini teams. (Probably been done ad nauseum I know). Even better - choose game in simulation whose outcome closet represents simulation results and and produce a game video.

Free version of this app doesn't go back far enough :(( http://www.ncaagamesim.com/GameSimulator.asp

Any takers?

IMO '89 was more talented and a stronger team overall. The BIG was a physical conference and loaded with excellent teams. I forget the injuries that year, but someone was down for a number of games after we hit #1 in the polls (I was at the Georgia Tech game when we came back to win that one -great memories of that insane comeback). Anyway, the 04-05 team I believe was healthier. 04-05 was a magical season, and it's hard to put a value on the will to win that group had.

It would be interesting to add up the NBA games those teams rosters eventually played in. I think 89-90 would win that comparison easily, even though Deon played internationally after being drafted. Anyone know why, btw, he took that over the NBA?

Thanks for doing that! They kind of lost me, though, when they said that Williams and Bardo were shooting guards
It wasn’t me - this was a post by someone else a while back who put the sim together

Deon? Deron played 11 years in the NBA and avg 16 pts. Augustine 2 yrs in NBA and then international, Brown played parts of two seasons in the NBA and the rest international. Powell played 3 games in the NBA. Head played 6 NBA seasons.
Gill 14 seasons, Anderson 13 seasons, Liberty 4 seasons, Bardo 3 seasons, Battle 3+ seasons
1988-89 team had a lot more NBA games but all starters on both teams had some NBA experience. Pretty impressive from that view.
