Illini Basketball Staff Extensions Announced

On court assistant salary pool was increased by more than 25%...so it jumps to over 1 million total...think you’d see OA close to $500,000
That should take away some of the allure for OA of the small school D1 head coach market. I think that is close to what he made in Florida, although I can't remember exactly.

So, so glad that Whitman has seen the light.
The NCAA has proven itself a feckless, capricious wreck, that makes many rules it can't even enforce. If it was an organization that had integrity, and some even-handedness, I think I'd want to approach it with a little more respect. However, reform seems a long, long ways away. In the meantime, you have to look at how the best are competing. I don't like how college bball runs, but I'm not naive enough to expect it to change. If the boosters have influenced Whitman, then good for them.

Ryan Pedon, tOSU, just signed a new 2 year agreement in September 2019 for $500.000 per year. Terry Johnson their # 2 assitant is at $325.000 per.

This is great news, the extension of BU, assistants, and Fletch.

However, the above highlighted is so.....:hurl::frustrated:
I will say that even though RG is his mentor he understands what he has and is willing to pony up to keep it. Unlike RG who was to proud to match Kansas offer

RG and I were classmates so we come out of the same era but that era hasn't been around for decades.

I have always looked at RG as a manager. Bills would be paid, some improvement facility wise if we could afford it, conservative, nothing outside the box, no risk taking. He was a later version of Cecil Coleman. He always struck me as a control freak but that might be wrong. Not Mr. Congeniality.

JW is much more of a visionary, he knows where he wants to take the program and how to get there but it will be difficult particularly in football. Also expensive. His fundraising has been impressive when you consider that 3 years ago our 2 revenue sports ASPIRED to be dumpster fires.

I don't think specifics have not been released yet. It is more than what they were making below though.

"In May of 2018, it was announced that the contract extensions through April 2020: in men's basketball, Orlando Antigua ($350,000), Jamall Walker ($275,000), Ron Coleman Jr. ($225,000) and head strength coach Adam Fletcher ($160,000)"
Fletch was way undervalued then.

BU has said "we have the best strength and conditioning coach in the country".

I am expecting (hoping) that Fletch gets a big bump. We have some of the best conditioned athletes in the conference and the strength gains per photos are impressive.

OA getting an offer from say a Providence, St Johns, UMASS, those types with location and recruiting basis close is who I am scared of...with our recruiting success so far and hopefully more to come, I think he would be above a smaller D-1 school offer?

Providence and St Johns coaches make around $2m per year. I’m sure OA would leave to go take over a program at that level in the northeast. Pretty much any assistant would. But I’m not sure he’d get a look as a HC at that level without some lower level head coaching success given his results at USF.

The only thing that would worry me East Coast wise is if Jeff Capel would find a way to take over for Coach K at Duke.

I could see OA wanting and getting the Pitt job.

as much as i would hate to lose OA, if he gets a solid HC job it wouldn’t be difficult for BU to fill his spot with an excellent assistant. it would obviously mean that we had continued our rise as a program. happy that we at least have him for the next recruiting class to settle in

i really think Gentry is a rising star in an increasingly analytics-based game. needs to prove his worth on the recruiting trail

When you have a recruiter at OA's level, it's going to be hard to keep him. I hope he's happy here, but memories in sports are generally short, and "ace recruiter" is so so valuable in college bball. USF is a black mark on his development, and a pretty big one given they moved out of the Big East and they still struggled badly. But he'll get another shot, and he'll have a lot more experience to fix whatever problems hurt his record there. The game's always changing anyways.

I probably speak for a lot of O&B fans when I say, I hope that day is still a ways off. I like whatever's making the secret sauce right now.

Very good move by Whitman. I was ready to dump BU after the Missouri game. I was wrong for not letting the season play out. There is a slight risk here because of the previous two years. However, he has earned a lot of respect this year. My thought was he might look really appealing to a big school like Texas or Kansas if they were forced to dump Self.
Props to Whitman for making the move to eliminate the conversation before it became a conversation.
Not much of a risk when you look at the incoming recruiting class. We have things rolling people! Congrats to Wood and staff, fantastic job fellas.

I would bet against it.
Yeah. Texas May be the one program that worries me, but I think Shaka is out this year so Texas is likely a non-factor at this point

one other point: I think Illinois is probably a better job than Texas, but the money at Texas is basically unbeatable. That’s what scares me

Don't underestimate the allure of Matthem McConaughey in a burnt orange suit encouraging your bench to cheer.
