Yeah I'll wear a facemask while sucking beer through a straw if it means people can attend games.
Since you wont be able to hear the half filled stadium due to the facemask, I wonder if IL will come up with some unified noise makers the crowd could use, like cowbells or hit sticks....

that would then require ear plugs - hard pass on a drunk fan behind me ringing a cowbell in my ear for the entire game...

I say create an app that then sends your cheer thru speakers located in your section - 4 buttons. Note, this could also be used from home if the stadium is empty or practicing social distancing. (You'd have to buy a virtual ticket).
1. Boo
2. Golf clap
3. Medium cheer
4. "We Just beat MSU on a last ditch toss into the endzone" scream

PS. Anyone steals this and makes money off of it - I want my 10%.

Would I attend games if required to wear a mask? Yes. Would I attend games if others are not required to wear a mask? No.

Caution, political rant ahead. This has never been (or purported to be) a country where people are allowed to do whatever they want. It has been a country where people can typically do whatever they want SO LONG AS IT DOES NOT HARM OR ENDANGER OTHERS. We don't allow others to drive drunk because it endangers other. Yes, I accept the risk of driving on the highway. Would I accept the risk of driving on the highway if there were no laws precluding drunk driving? No.

Of all the years us Illini fans have wanted the season to end just so we can be put out of our misery, this year, 2020, the year where we have an easy schedule and our best team in years is the year where Football has quite a solid chance of being cancelled:cry:

I guess that depends on how we measure performance. If we are strictly looking at record regardless of school or fan expectation then it has to be lovie. If you factor in fan expectations then it could be several coaches. Scott frost stands out to me.
I might put Jim Harbaugh above Scott Frost, but I think Lovie might top them all. We are on our fifth year and hoping the pillow soft non-conference schedule gets played so that finally, finally!, there is a chance at a winning record. In four full recruiting classes he has only recruited five 4 star recruits and, so far, no others on the way. The recruiting has been so bad we hope he is able to pick up someone else's backups on the transfer market to fill the recruiting holes, and not just one or two transfers, but several transfers. My expectations for Lovie Smith, and I don't think I was alone, were that Illinois would be competing for the relatively weak Big Ten West title, not the division basement, and he would be killing it on the recruiting trail.

I had very similar reservations about Lovie as I did BU. Neither have been HCs at this level of their respective sport, one which puts heavy emphasis on talent and using personal skills (rather than money) to get that talent. I thought the easiest way to do this for both of them was to surround themselves with a staff that would've had a bigger background in recruiting at this level.

BU has definitely passed that criteria. Lovie, especially at the beginning, failed completely. He relied heavily on creating his own staff, which seemed to favor NFL experience and knowledge over something more college oriented. I don't think for a second his team his first year would've been anything other than the trainwreck that it was, but getting a higher level of talent here earlier definitely wouldn't have been impossible. I don't expect top 25 recruiting classes, but to always be ranked in the bottom half, if not third or forth, or the B1G shows there's major talent gap between us and the rest of the B1G.

I don't think that automatically ends our hopes at being a contender for the B1G occasionally, but scratching and clawing our way to 6 wins isn't exceeding your talent level by much. Lovie has elevated our talent level, but it's possible we still are the worst team in the B1G West. There's more than one way to win in our position, perhaps Lovie can find a way to do so, but it wont be by fielding teams that have more raw talent than others.

it's really quite simple, if the masks do help then I'm potentially saving lives, if they don't work then I'm wearing a mask that mildly inconveniences me.

I agree with part of this, but not all of it. Add a few 4* to our roster it’s not going to help much, unless it’s at positions where we struggle. We have a depth problem, which is still a recruiting problem, but it’s not a top end problem. It is possible to add too wnd talent where we lack depth, but that’s not a guarantee. D line doesn’t have a lot of high ranking talent, because so much development happens in school. Some of this will get evened out with one more year of lovies recruits. We will have another class to draw from. Some will take a second round of recruits (assuming he makes it that long). Mostly because of 2018. The 2018 class was problematic because many of the players didn’t make it, unije, slaughter, rivers, Myers, Taylor, etc. Assuming players like Avery and Brown make the leap this summer, we will be less in a hole, but that list above was all top end talent (85 ranking and above). Our low end talent has Salvaged that class: Martin, Barker, brown, ware, Carter. I care less about the rankings when they have p5 level traits.

We need to take fewer flyers. Fewer players with ratings but lack top end talent. The staff addressed this by making adjustments, they are recruiting players with nfl/p5 speed and/or size and/or athleticism. We have found some gems, such as sydney brown and devon Witherspoon and Tariqe Barnes, which will bring down our rankings, but who cares? but these players have something that the staff can develop.

The bigger problem is that we have quite a bit of deadweight on the roster, which are the players that haven’t panned out and we are not sure if they will pan out. It will be interesting to see how to staff deals with this. Will the players he created, so we can have better rankings? Or will we send them packing at year 4?

With transfers, this is part of the college game now. The 5* and high 4* are going to the same schools, Clemson, Alabama, Ohio state, And others. They won’t all get playing time and some will leave. Given the number of people that legitimately compete for a national title in the playoff model, the top end talent will mostly go to the top end schools. We are first movers on this and we have an nfl coach. But it will only work for gaps. We aren’t getting top end talent to transfer for positions with competition. But, I would take this as a pet of our program moving forward.

Despite what I said, we obviously could use top end talent. But where we are in our rebuild is to get where Minnesota was without fleck. Let’s qualify for bowl games consistently, it’s not something we have ever done.m as a university. Once we do that, we will be ready to pick up higher end talent and start competing for big ten west titles. I would say the next 4 to 5 years we should qualify for 3 to 4 bowls and by 2023, we will be ready to start taking a more consistent shot at big west titles.

Not sure if that is a legit question and my wording has been misinterpreted or if that is a failed excuse at humor. Sorry

I saw a man on the street interview over the weekend where a non-mask wearing man noted that the was a lack of bipartisan science on the matter.

Would I attend a game if masks were required? Yes.

Would I attend a game if masks were only encouraged? Not at this present time.

Would I attend a game if I were seated shoulder to shoulder with a stranger or right in front/behind a stranger? Also no.

As an infectious disease scientist, this is such a no brainer it literally hurts my head hearing people try to weasel out of wearing a mask.

Would I attend in a mask, yes. Especially in Champaign, I would guess 50% capacity will be most likely a high water mark this year, due to circumstances. A lot of our season ticket holders are older, and I would encourage them not to attend. I feel comfortable in outdoor restaurant seating, without a mask, when people are 6-8 feet away. So, 3-4 ft away, with a mask. I am good. Especially, since I could walk around a little. SFC, I would have more hesitation. Something about being outside seems safer.

Half filled might be a stretch. Last year we had only one home game where paid attendance was over 40k and that was due to the throngs of invaders from Nebraska. The other home games were in the vicinity of 35k. Actual butts in the seats would have been thousands less. We're way ahead of the curve if the NCAA limits attendance to, say, 50% capacity.

half was just easier to type then two thirds or one fourth if I am being completely honest. And yet I had to type not just one of them, but all three

I get it - but there are some noises that are more obnoxious than others. The other idea is to enjoy the game without some knucklehead ringing or clapping something right in my ear. Oh, I also hate the whistlers who think for some reason everyone enjoys their two fingered talent. Now, everyone, off my lawn!

Out of curiousity has it been announced how this year will work with regards to eligibility? I assume it won't count but players can still grad transfer if they get their degree?

Player abuse scandal. Fired AD. Fourth head coach in five years. Depleted roster made worse by effectively losing a recruiting cycle thanks to "not ideal" interim coaching hire. 15 losing seasons out of past 20. Nationally-clowned Coach Beckman. Turmoil/turnover at the top of the administration. Fan support declining/ongoing bitterness from Chief retirement. Decrepit facilities.

It was a huge dumpster fire. Lovie and Whitman got us out of that, thank goodness.
I'm just glad there was a dumpster fire in the first place so we can keep pointing to that and feel good about Lovie

If there was no dumpster fire we would've either fired lovie by now or he would have a better record than he does. It's really sad how low our expectations have fallen.

Yes, we ordered orange block I face coverings weeks ago. I expect a plan including mandatory face coverings and spacing. It will take some creativity to determine where everyone’s new seats will be located. Logic indicates that most everyone will be further away from the field than their purchased locations.

But I’ll soldier on. CANT WAIT TO SEE THIS TEAM!!
