Illini great & HOF Bobby Mitchell has passed away

#2
My second memory of Illinois football. Bobby Mitchell ran for 186 yards and Illinois upset #1 Michigan State on homecoming. Two of the runs were for 80 plus yards.
Man I'm getting old.

My three prized football cards, in the beginning, we're Bobby Mitchell, J.C. Caroline, and Ernie McMillan. I've always felt they should have received more respect from the university and from us.

Bobby Mitchell had a daily radio show here in the Washington, DC region. He was revered here. The other sports radio shows did their best today to honor him.

He was the first African_American to play for the Redskins, which (IIRC) were the final NFL team to integrate. As breadman noted, he was revered here in DC. RIP. Proud that he was an Illini.

I'm getting old, too. I remember attending that game. Was living in Michigan at the time which made the upset even more sweet.
