Illinois 117, Lindenwood 65 POSTGAME

Ayo and Tevian was late for shoot around last year and missed the whole East Tennessee St game.
I'm willing to put $ down that the team has pre-defined rules/penalties for situations like this. I'm sure before the season starts, BU sits the whole team down and outlines basic infractions (e.g. being late to a practice) and standard punishments. I bet they even have different punishments for how many times it has happened.

Assuming that's the case, then it's up to the players to decide if the punishment is fair for the infraction...and they should do this before the season starts, let alone before the infraction is committed. If you don't like the team rules, go elsewhere (transfer portal). Nobody is forcing you to play. Given we saw this occur last year with the same penalty (and if i recall, the players came out publicly and supported BU's decision), I can't imagine AG is that surprised with the outcome, and we're all making too big a deal about this.

These types of attitudes amaze me. So if you are a couple of minutes late for your job and your superior gives you a month off without pay, it is okay. After all, there is no overkill when enforcing rules and expectations.
A month without pay is a tiny difference than one game. If I was paid hourly and showed up late without a phone call, I would expect a warning shot. That's what this was for AG...
A warning shot. I'm sure if he was late because class got out late or there was an incident precluding him from getting there on time.....BU would have taken that into consideration. If he bends the rules for one, he needs to bend the rules for all when it comes to being "a couple minutes late".

His job isn't to operate a preschool or a middle school program. He's there to not only coach basketball, but teach them responsibility....which includes punctuality.

Show up on time!

I was particularly incensed with two cheerleader sequences during the first half.
Unacceptable.
And who chooses the order of seating the players use on the bench? Can we not get this organized and standardized?

We’d better get this stuff fixed before real games start.

To paraphrase Dan Hawkins. This is Divison 1 Basketball. It's the Big 10. This isn't intramurals. If you can't handle it, can't show up on time, go play intramurals brother!

Yes it’s your job your not visiting your girlfriend you get paid to be there on time there are small exceptions to every situation but be on time at all cost or pay the piper it’s a choice
I truly hope that you get to embrace that type of punishment someday. You have no idea as to why he was late but, you feel that there should be no limits to his punishment. He pays a far higher price everyday and doesn't get a paycheck. Please keep acting all superior. There is a thing called karma. I hope you remember your words, And yes, I do believe in values, integrity, and discipline.

The athletes are being paid now?

I have seen plenty of superiors have rules for their "employees", then think those rules don't apply to them. Like showing up on time.

I'm fine with the discipline for being late, but I think sitting out the entire game may have been overkill. But, I'm not aware of the circumstances. Maybe this wasn't the first offense? Hopefully the coaching staff and AG are on the same page for this one.
I agree, I thought the whole game penalty was too much but I don't know the history. AG did mention at the last press conference that Ayo has been an example of professionalism for him. I would like to see Tevian back on the court as well, mainly because I would like for him to have a successful career at Illinois. But once again we don't know the specifics of the issues. I'm sure BU would rather discipline these issues in an effort to maintain good order across all facets of his program.

Yep. Going over expectations beforehand and then enforcing those rules when necessary is basic leadership. Shouldn't be controversial.

My question is this: If Kofi or Ayo are 5 minutes late to shoot around the day of the Michigan St. game how equally will these rules be enforced? I'm of the mindset that the same violation should be treated equally regardless of who the player is or who we're playing, so does Griffin no playing against a D-II team for being late dictate how you'd handle your best player playing or not playing an entire conference game?

Presumably the precedent has now been set for this season, as you suggest.
So, I hope that someone is making darned sure that those guys are early.
Not on time, early.

Go, Illini !

Thought I heard BU say in the postgame that he'd enforce it the same even if it were his son or a starter in the National Championship game.

To answer this in a short, direct manner: We don’t know. This hasn’t happened.

I hope this board doesn’t go down a rabbit hole of “what ifs” in this scenario. That is make for some extremely boring reads.

I just want to note that we have no idea how late he was. There's a difference between being 5 mins late and 45 mins late.

Absolutely. Whether it's an NCAA Tournament game or a game against Lindenwood...same rules apply for all, regardless of opponent.

As someone who's worked for newspapers, you miss a deadline? you miss a deadline. There's no gray area. You just don't miss it.

These rules are about establishing and advancing a culture, and a proper mindset players need to have. Fudging around with the rules/consequences is the worst thing you can do.

It happened last year with Ayo and Tevian.....

I can't believe the people that are having trouble grasping this.....

Hampton has a higher rating than both of Evansville and Stephen F Austin on KenPom. My point is I don’t think we should be basing this teams future performance on our slow starts to some lower ranked teams and that loss to Arizona.

Griffin being late yesterday dictate's nada. The rule is in place before that. You are late, you sit, so be frickin' early!

I’d bet there is mention of team rules in the scholarship paperwork.

Didn't learn much from that one, but glad to see TF hit some shots. I can see holding AG out for the first half for arriving late to shoot-around, but to not play him at all seems a bit overkill when he was just starting to gain confidence.
It's been a pattern for the kid.

So um can someone analyze what happened in this game instead of the shootaround.
