That does sound promising for Joe Moore. 440 can probably answer this one. It doesn't appear that we have many OV's for football. Good attendance for BBQs & unofficials, but for a talent like Moore, shouldn't we push for an OV as well? I realize for Moore, with the dead period for all of August, no real time left to have an OV (although after commit sounds like a good promise from here). But in general, are we offering OV's to these local guys? Even if they want their OV's to be at places more exotic than the Beloved (say it ain't so that there could be such a place!).

Correct me if I am wrong (not looking it up), but haven't all those teams won at least one national title since 1980 (UGA)? I know it has been a long time since '80, but only 1 team gets to win each year.

edit, corrected year for UGA, thought 83, also looked it up, these teams, plus Tennessee have won or shared 19 titles since 1980, only Oregon has not won a national title.
To SequoiaIllini's point, they have all underachieved with the level of talent they bring in. For example, Tennessee's conference records from 2018-2008 have been 2-6, 0-8, 4-4, 5-3, 3-5, 2-6, 1-7, 1-7, 3-5, 4-4, 3-5. I'm not going to say Georgia or Oklahoma have been failures, but USC, Florida, Miami, Texas...they have some stellar talent and have looked like poo on the field these last few years

I am no fan of UT, but losing 3-5 games, when you play Alabama, Georgia and Florida every year, plus some combo of Auburn, LSU, Texas A&M, SC and your breathers are UK and Vandy. I agree, 0-8 is bad, but 3-5 could be not bad, depending on the opponent. That 4-4 conf in 2016, was 9-4 with a bowl win over #24 Nebraska, when you include the rest. The SEC is just ridiculously loaded, as we all know.

Ok don't get me started about the overrated SEC and their weak a** schedule please. Lets stay focused. Over the years I listed, they finished in the top 25 twice....Yes, twice. At a whooping 22 and 22. Are they considered a disappointment with all the talent they have brought in? Yes they are. That is the point. Disappointment

FYI they lost to their "breather" Vandy the year you mentioned.

I see that SEC marketing is still the best in the nation for some incredibly overrated football. I will give Alabama their due but, after that....

The NCAA's recruiting calendar is weird, so schools actually can't host any more official visits until the season starts. That's why Joe Moore isn't going to Arizona State this weekend since they mistakenly thought they could.

Yes, they did, and beat ranked GA and FL, don't know if there was a key injury or something, they were up to #11 I believe, before losing to A&M, AL, SC and later Vandy. I really don't want to research 2016, that may be the year that they beat OU to early in the season, that may have been the year before.

Those GA and FL games were awesome. My wife was living in Knoxville at the time so I was following the Vols. I thought the college football Gods were throwing me a life line, but then they quickly started to suck and turned into the underachieving team you see today

I know they like the BBQ as a way to get a lot of the top guys in campus at one time and let them gel. As far as OVs it’s just tough you’d ideally like to get your top prospects here during a big time B1G game and sell the atmosphere and a big win but.....we don’t really have that to sell right now. The staff is pretty selective on the timing of OVs but if Joe does verbal this weekend then he will get an OV in the future as will Mookie and a couple other prospects.

Agree recruiting is very important, disagree all coaches can teach the game equally.

Now I’m not saying they can all teach equally but they all know the game of football. I had conversations with Beckman when he was here and as dumb as he was believe it or not he knew football.

There is no perfect level. There is what works and what doesn’t work. You only know what doesn’t work by failing. I like the current mix. I think we have a good number of players that are growing into men. Outside of this year, I’ve been happy with recruiting (and the class is not complete). The end of next season, we will know if it worked. Lovies tenure may end this season. When it comes to talent, we are trending up. Hopefully, that leads to more wins. I think 2020 is the year everything comes together with 10 wins. I hope next year is at least halfway there

I apologize in advance if anyone has answered this question already, but does anyone know how many recruits we are want to take in this class?

I really hope we can land Moore, but it seems like he really likes Minnesota’s coaching staff. I would love if Sparks committed this weekend too. I feel as if he is really ours for the taking and under the radar. Former Illini Marques Wilkins really likes him.

So now you are bringing in the issue of ranking teams before they even play 1 football game. Florida and Georgia were ranked when they played, I have no doubt. But you have to tell me what those teams did to garner a ranking as a top 25 team in the country by week 4 of the season. Beating UMass, Kentucky, North Texas, North Carolina, Nicholls State (Yes that is the correct spelling) and Missouri isn't knocking anyone socks off. So I don't care. The end of the season tells you what they are ranked, not during the season.
Disappointment

Fair enough. I do agree teams should have to play prior to getting ranked, similar to the BCS (yikes, did I really type that?), but that would ruin the whole pre-season magazine stuff.

Not sure how legit this video is, those could be 25Ib plates. But it came across my feed this am
Got me thinking about our videos of our lineman just putting up 305. This kid is a senior in HS, committed to Auburn. Different athletes
Assuming those in fact 45lb plates (hard to tell because they are bumper plates but I assume so), then that is 405. Damn impressive for a young kid, but he has really good form. If he could put it overhead he could probably get a shot at making the US Olympic weighlifting team.

Different athletes, but also a different lift. This lift is what I would call a clean: the weight is lifted just high enough to get under and he is essentially finishing with a 405 lb. full front squat. The lifts you've been seeing from the Illini are what I would call a power clean. It is lifted much higher (hence, requiring more power) and essentially finishing with a quarter front squat. While not discounting how impressive it is, this athlete's weight was too heavy for him to perform a proper power clean.

I do know the difference in the clean and power clean. But take a look at the first "power clean" tweet you see when scrolling through Lou's twitter
Legs go all the way down to parallel before front squatting up, very similar catch points
Jartavious Martin
But I will stand corrected that most our lineman and LBs are catching high without the needed squat.
