Then why hire a Texas person to help with relationships in Illinois? That doesn't make sense to me. Would you hire a high school coach from Chicago to recruit the Trinity kids from St. Louis? When they wanted kids out of Florida they hired a Coach from Florida. When they wanted kids from Texas, they hired people from Texas. Not sure why this is difficult to understand.
That is fair. They literally said to contact Washington if interested. To me it seems like a meet in the middle. They are giving an opportunity. Positive (who has a very good connection) and would likely be able to find out what the staff did also said they sent invites out to every school. Not sure where the misinformation is there. Then Title says Sunkett never got one. To me it sounds like our typical in state mess. Maybe Sunkett didn't get one and Illinois has decided to cut ties? Idk.
Do you know how many emails AD's are getting daily? With this Covid situation, emails are coming non stop. That is not the best way to get someone attention. Would you send an email to the High School to get in touch with a recruit? Set up a zoom call via email without confirmation of receipt? The Coaches Clinic in March have hundreds of coaches attend from all over the state. You don't find it odd that just ONE high school attended the zoom call? This is not bashing the system, just stating facts. 500 emails and only one join sounds like something need to fixed with a different approach.
Again..the staff is not innocent. I have said that. I do not think they are doing well in state. They have made an effort with zoom IMO. Maybe not the greatest strategy in some people's eyes. That is fine. Nothing left to argue about.
Since you are plugged in ESL (which is cool, glad we have someone here who is), is there a way Illinois gets there foot back in the door there or is it a lost cause?
Lol you are so wrong it’s hilarious. Show me a single positive tweet from sunket about Illinois in the last 18 months. Sunket tried to force the staffs hand publicly to take a player. And Lovie doesn’t take crap from anyone, especially some high school coach. He pissed Lovie off and I doubt Lovie wants to deal with him anymore, hence the lack of going to his school. So I’ll ask again please show me a single pro Illinois tweet since his Powell tweet. Cause he’s been pumping out mizzou tweet like he works for the recruiting department.you are spot on. Their efforts are elsewhere which is fine. Especially if they are landing the recruits. I just don’t understand the need to window dress the desire to recruit in state when reality shows differently. Making up BS about in state coaches just to camouflage the desire to recruit elsewhere. As long as you win, who cares where the kids are coming from. No need to lie about it.
Well considering we’ve gotten 5 kids from trinity in the last 4 years maybe there is some good faith there.
I’m not comparing. Title said we reached for a Mac level player at trinity (assuming he’s talking about Childress) and I made the point that we have a strong relationship there. So maybe we are more willing to reach for a prospect at a school where we have a strong relationship. Pretty simple.Come on. We can't compare the "faith" between Trinity and Illinois to any other program and claim another high school is falling short. If an Illinois high school said to give us the same treatment as Trinity (i.e., hire the head coach to be on UI staff), we would (all) mock them endlessly.
Stoutness against the run comes from big powerful defensive tackles. So strength coaches and size at that position along with good coaching can change that. We need to hit the weight room... and I mean not just fake strength from taking supplements to get the look, but real hard earned strength...I actually think speed is what we are missing. Lovie's cover two asks for the back 7 to cover a lot of ground to be effective especially from the Mike and the secondary. Even on the DL it is more about speed through the gap and disruption to help the back 7 make plays on poorly thrown/timed balls. Basically speed makes our defense go, and getting more is going to make us better.
We'll never be super stout against the run and we will bleed yardage, but TOs are the key and our defensive stats will reflect TO margin and offensive possession.
I believe becoming relevant in state and elsewhere is what matters most in gaining ground in state and out period! Northwestern had been more relevant in these kids history than Illinois has been. So to them we're bottom feeders and they look down on us. We are starting to change that with the play on the field and it started by first getting a HUGE name first in this state in coach Lovie Smith. Can we pump the brakes on this for every in-state kid that chooses elsewhere? We don't need to goad posters if a recruit doesn't get an Illinois offer and commits elsewhere or if the staff offers and commits elsewhere.
This kid grew up a big NW fan, is from that area, he chose NW. And offering a recruit the June before his senior year is not a late offer (my guess is NW knew they could take their time on him and would have offered earlier if they felt pressure that Illinois could snag him). And this is the exact thinking that's problematic. The staff needs to be more active in the state but (emphasis added) becoming active in the state does not guarantee commitments.
I do wonder how the staff is playing the game this year. Years past, I believe story was, once you are committed, that’s it, no looking around. So DD is announcing on July 6th. Chevy brenson is supposedly close to a decision. Looks like we are pushing hard for a couple committed guys. I hope we can get close to about 15 commits by the end of july. Also I’m certain when visit open back up we’re gonna see some of our guys take visits to other places, along with us trying to get some guys committed elsewhere on campus. Name to keep a eye out for is jakiah leftwhich (currently commited to GT).
Some will be solid and some won’t. I think schools that have taken a lot of commits early (Tennessee, Boston college, Georgia tech) will have more decommits because they are gonna try and push some kids out.I do wonder how the staff is playing the game this year. Seems like earlier this year, that continued, to their detriment. I don’t know if that plan has been adjusted, and now are expecting Some decommitts, or these are pretty solid verbals. Hope the latter.
I would agree definitely if there are no camps/ no senior tape. Some will be solid and some won’t. I think schools that have taken a lot of commits early (Tennessee, Boston college, Georgia tech) will have more decommits because they are gonna try and push some kids out.
