I believe the OSU start player was Gary Brads, who was their center.Which brings to mind a trivia question which I remember vividly as it was one of the highlights of a youthful experience. Downey played on the '63 team that won the Big Ten title on the last day. Ohio State had to lose their last game and the Illini had to win to give the Illini the title. Who beat the Buckeyes that day and who was their star player? The reason I remember is that I was with a high school teammate that had signed with this team and we sat at mid-court with our elbows on the elevated floor and were pulling for the home team....though no one knew the real reason.
My favorite memory was the 62/63 team and the game against Bowling Green in the Tournament. In the last few seconds of the game one of our players threw the ball from the BG free throw line and the ball went through for a 2 pointer. I believe it was Bill Starnes, but maybe it was Tal Brody. Anyway the shot had to be 70 feet. That was also the year Dave Downey was a first team All American. He has had a very successful life in the CU area.
