No fans at NCAA Tournament, B1G Tournament

I think the NCAA should finish the conference tourneys (or not) pick the 68 and then suspend the tourney for a couple weeks. Then take a look at the landscape to see how this is progressing. The players, coaches and fans are all in this together. Give it some time before you pull the plug or play these games under the current cicumstances.
I think a couple weeks is pretty optimistic. Hubei province has been locked down since January 23rd, and if there's any easing happening, it's gradual. Not saying that to be alarming — just that the point of these measures is to slow down the spread of things, which necessarily draws things out (but reduces the number of cases to handle at a time).

Edit: that said, part of me will always be hoping they still have a Selection Sunday show. I really really want to see that "Illinois" on a bracket again.

I think you're underestimating the gravity of all that went on here just in the last few hours....

A Jazz player (Gobert) tests positive for CV-19.

The NBA suspends it's season

The NHL is having discussions on their season tomorrow.

A college coach gets Ill on the sideline, ends up in the hospital and his team gets quarantined.

A WAC game gets stopped and postponed due to an unspecified illness.

You can see where the force is taking the end of this season. It's to the dark side man.

This is a complete public relations disaster. I know that most see me as insensitive but public scare tactics only weaken an already nearly defeated global economy. This will be an absolute mess to reverse from.
I do think that's insensitive. A pandemic is not anyone's fault. There are HUGE conflicts of interest here, with many businesses reliant on tourism and entertainment. They have to push their interests because decisions can kill thier pocketbooks. OTOH, it is exceedingly rare for the government to take on special interests or step in and do the right thing. I'm actually encouraged that public outrage over these industries actions has caused officials to enforce the greater public's demand for better decisions. Even the lying sacks of poo at the top are finally responding, even if it's just for show and getting re-elected.

You can be cynical against the businesses (I generally am). And you can be cynical against the government (most of us are.) HOWEVER, I'm encouraged that voters are screaming loud enough to be heard, even if some are overly panicked.

Slowing the spread of this thing will allow medical resources to respond rather than be stretched to the breaking point. America has way too many high-risk people in the populace -- it will be fatal for some unhealthy and unlucky people. If you and all your loved ones are unaffected, be glad.

Really feel sorry for a kid like Kipper Nichols. Worked his butt off during his career, sticks around during the tough years when IL didn't make the tourney. Now he finally gets a chance to experience an NCAA tourney and this happens. Really sucks.

I wonder how hard it will be to play. They are so use to having screaming lunatics in the stands. Some players get motivated by the noise. How do yo practice for a situation like this. I guess you would go back to the scrimmage like we did against South Carolina. It sure will be different.

I'm interested to see if they do anything creative on tv to keep fans interested. Obviously die hards will watch, but casual fans might not enjoy it without the crowd.

Maybe do an all access like our game against Penn St where both coaches are mic'd up. Something that makes it more than just a normal game.
I really don't think the casual fan watches the tourney to see the crowd. One good thing about no fans though -- don't have to have the cuts to fans leaning in to try to get seen by cameras while pulling on their shirts and making stupid faces.

I feel like there is a really good chance the games get cancelled after what happened in the NBA. If there is 1 sick player on any tournament team the whole thing has to shut down.

Say it happens mid tournament. One sick player = one quarantined team. This would have to end in a game forfeit and which really puts into question the integrity of the results. And this doesn't even consider teams traveling to other cities and spreading to hotels/etc.

Yep, literally posted that at the same time in the other thread.
