Pete Rose uses Astros saga to ask for reinstatement

Pete Rose asked commissioner Rob Manfred on Wednesday morning to remove his name from Major League Baseball's ineligible list, which would allow the all-time hits leader to be considered for induction into the Hall of Fame.

In a petition sent to the MLB commissioner's office and obtained by ESPN, Rose and his lawyers argue that Manfred has recently opted not to punish players guilty of major game-changing rules infractions and, as a result, should end Rose's 30½-year ban for gambling on baseball while he was manager of the Cincinnati Reds. The lawyers say that Rose's lifetime ban is "vastly disproportionate" when compared with MLB's punishments of players who took performance-enhancing drugs and the players involved in the sign-stealing schemes by the 2017 Houston Astros.

In the early 1980s, Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays were placed on MLB's ineligible list by commissioner Bowie Kuhn for accepting jobs as greeters at Atlantic City casinos. But in 1985, commissioner Peter Ueberroth removed Mantle and Mays from the ineligible list, saying, "The world has changed."

Mantle and Mays are in the Hall of Fame.

I have always been in favor of the lifetime ban and excluding Pete from The Hall. (At least until after his death.) I have to say over the past few years I have been moderating that opinion. I don't know that Pete has "reformed" as he suggests but his achievements merit a place in Cooperstown.

Side question- Has anyone else been there? I went with my dad, a couple of brothers and a nephew. My son was in the service and couldn't make it. I can't wait until my grandson is a few years older and the three of us make the journey together.

I don’t think Pete Rose should be involved with the MLB or any team in any capacity. Not as coach, scout, front office exec, consultant, publicity shill, or anything else.

If he wants to go to a ballgame, he should have to buy a ticket.

But if the issue is simply whether he should be included in the Hall of Fame, then I think he should.

as long as i don't know for sure (but the implication is yes) that he
never bet on his team, to win or lose, i never want him in baseball
or the baseball hall of fame in any capacity. (not even cleaning up)
period. Bart Giamati built quite a case.

is there a gambler's hall of fame?

AJ Hinch will be managing next year. His cheating might well have changed a World Series and scores of many games. I wasn’t for lifting Pete’s ban until now. Now I say either ban Hinch, Luhnow and Cora for life or give Pete his place as hits leader in the HOF.

Pete Rose deserves to be in the baseball Hall of Fame, because he was simply the best hitter in the game outside of Ted Williams.

He, like many others, won't get my vote on "Sainthood."

Like many others, I have softened on this. One of the best players in his era, didn't take a play off. Gave it everything he had. It's been 40 (?) years since the violations, he allegedly had a deal in place with the commissioner, who then died before reinstating him. Oh, and Shoeless Joe should get in too. He didn't take the money.

Joe should get in as well but he took the money. Comisky was tight fisted and stuck it to the players every chance he got. Jackson just didn't throw the games. He hit .375/.394/.563 with a OPS of .956! His season numbers were .351/.422/506 and .928. So much for trying to throw games.

Really, I didn't realize that.
