Pregame: Illinois vs Nebraska, Saturday, September 21st, 7:00pm CT, BTN

I've managed to convince myself that last week was the "lose one you're not supposed to lose" game that should be baked into the projections for most college football teams. I'm hoping there's a balancing "win one you shouldn't win" game coming up on the schedule.

It's Wednesday. Like some degenerate addict, I'm once again staring at the orange Kool-Aid and remembering how good it tastes before the hangover.

I just have this weird premonition that we're gonna win this game. I'm gonna be stuck at a wedding reception during the game, I think that's part of it.
Hmm. Could just be gas.

But seriously, I just don't see how we can win this game. When EMU marched effortlessly down the field for the winning score last week, the last bit of hope I had for this defense melted away. Nebraska is going to score a lot of points.

Hah. I'll be at a wedding rehearsal dinner. I think I'll go with the one, breathless check of the score at the end of the night rather than look every five minutes.

Haha me too, and me too! If you see someone glued to his phone, cursing profusely, and drinking away sorrows -- come say hi lol.

South Carolina
And this is where Whitman has failed. Having a defensive staff like this after one of the worst defensive seasons in program history? Come on.
I'm doubting they could have found anyone halfway respectable to fill the defensive vacancies.

It's always surprising how well you can do with clearly lame duck assistant jobs. These guys are accustomed to living a life where they move around from year to year, a Big Ten name on the resume and a nice salary will attract perfectly cromulent coaches.

Not Ideal Cubit hired Tim McGarigle and Paul Williams, who are currently on the full-time staff at Northwestern and Houston, respectively. I think we can be very sure Miles Smith and Gill Byrd will not attract the same sort of interest if their jobs at Illinois are lost.

Are you saying you think this was a strategic move by Lovie?

I know it is true.
My friends, mostly math & engineering students, didn't follow Illini athletics.
I'm talking about 8 of 8 close friends.
Not following Illini athletics is not the same thing as "having no interests outside their studies".

Kids are still kids, I've been around enough Gen Z'ers to know that.

Illinois needs strong support from the local community to be successful.
Forget Chicagoland.

Think local !
The University is located in Champaign
County, & many students come to this elite college from many backgrounds
& a variety of reasons.

If Adrian Martinez doesn't rip off at least 100 yards on Saturday, I'll be surprised.

There are nearly 60,000 students and university employees. One would think that selling them on spending eight Saturdays in Memorial Stadium should be easier than selling to those who need to drive a few hours to get there.

These were my posts on 11/25/18 & 7/13/19:

The key will be Eastern Michigan. That’s a sneaky tough game.

EMU beat Big Ten teams the last 2 years, and 4 points from knocking off Kentucky.

They’ve only lost by >7 twice in two years.

That game’s the pivot between a bowl and the season concluding 2 days after Thanksgiving.
EMU is the one I’m worried about. They lost 2 games by >3 points and 1 by >7. Beat Purdue. Year before they lost 1 by >7. Well coached team that plays everyone tough.

I could see a scenario where the team loses to EMU and then turns it around in B1G play to make a bowl a la Purdue last year.
The team’s right where I expected. 5.5 wins (3.5 B1G wins) with a loss to EMU factored in. Wins over Rutgers, Minnesota, & a surprise win. Late-season toss-up against Northwestern with a bowl on the line.

If that is the catalyst to a raucous environment that helps motivate the players, the payoff on those free tickets will be worth it.
I hope there is plenty of beer for the students to drink. And, the students drink plenty of beer.

For the love of God, please don’t come out in all orange. That will not only
guarantee a loss but insure we’ll look bad doing it.
