The Illinois AD Search

Anyone with thoughts on Larry Lubin?

Lubin, a former Illini basketball player with a passion that could blow the roof off the State Farm Center, convinced me he could be that visionary next athletics director. Oh, it takes some out-of-the-box thinking because Lubin won’t turn up in a search firm’s data base. And who knows if the current administration is willing to think outside the box?

.................

Spend a little time with Lubin, 58, and you will discover a man who could awaken the dream of Illini athletic greatness while simultaneously rousing the many, many discouraged alums who have not been engaged – financially or in other ways – because they simply are not inspired by the direction of recent leadership.

Unfortunately, I've been in a constant state of skeptical for about four years now. :(

What do I know about Lubin?

Lanter, Judson, and Lubin --- I recall when none of the 3 could dribble the ball upcourt vs. defensive pressure. Lanter and Judson improved and ultimately played on the 1979 15-0 (#2 in the nation) team.

Tressel or Rick George for AD. Big name. Big $$$.

Has there been any rumblings as to a timeline for hiring an AD? I mean, if Rick George is the guy (or Tiley, or whomever) this thing needs to get done. Can't be hiring a head football coach in January IMO.

I would suspect that if something like Rick George as AD or some other big move like that is going on, we won't hear about it until it is a done deal and being announced. Let's hope something like this is the case and that the replacement AD and coach are part of a grand plan.

What's the plan for filling top UI jobs?

Interim Chancellor Barbara Wilson says she will name the new athletic director to replace Mike Thomas, rather than waiting for a new chancellor to arrive on campus next spring.

Wilson doesn't have an exact time frame yet, but both she and UI President Timothy Killeen said they hope the search moves quickly.

UIUC Senate Meeting: Chancellor Wilson organizing AD search committee and make hire asap

from today's full meeting of the UIUC Senate meeting w faculty, student, and staff senators

yep she said as soon as possible. Not specific about before end of month. Definitely seems like we'll get AD before chancellor

The news-gazette article sounds like this will take some serious time. Wise wants to settle the search firm for AD in the "next week or two". Thats the end of the season to start the process of finding an AD. I really hope there is urgency here. It really would have been much easier if this had occurred shortly after Beckman was let go.

This seems to indciate that the new athletic director will come from the three
recent names in the news. It apparent that they dont have time or want to take
the time to do this any other way. If they did it would include a chancellor hire
first then an AD. Lets just hope the guy in Boulder doesn't much care for the
scrutiny he is now under and/or doesn't ski.

I also think that the new football coach is coming from a second tier list of candidates. There are way too many positions out there this year of higher prestige and potential than ours. I'm not sure Babers is that top tier guy, but Herman and Fuentes are going elsewhere or no where.

You don't know. Would Rick George be scared off if he didn't know who his chancellor is? The chancellor probably doesn't get very involved in athletics unless she has to. I'm more concerned about hiring a coach without an AD. Depending on the AD however, this can be overcome as well. Also, I think there are more good coaching candidates than jobs. No one speculated that Bill O'Brien (and possibly Kiffen) would be interviewed by Maryland. Minnesota hired Claeys and Purdue is standing pat. The pool of candidates mentioned by the media aren't the only candidates out there and some jobs are/will be filled by other coaches. We need a top notch AD or a group of prominent alums to step up and get this done.

Right now there are 10 coaching positions available, I think we will be looking at 18-20 openings in 3 weeks. 1-2 coaches could be looking to go the NFL route

That article gives me little to no hope they will get it right unless the right person falls into their arms. I don't think the university understands they can be great at academics and athletics at the same time...and that those can feed off each other (more wins = more excitement = more donors = higher applications...etc). The whole group up top seems to continue to be short sighted, which might be a product of the fact they are all 'interim'. :(

Plainfield
Big alums and Kileen need to take charge. You can't leave it to the interims.

I believe they are referring to the search firm to choose the next chancellor when they say they want that finalized next week. I'm pretty sure they are already assembling the search committee for AD. They also used the phrase "search consultant" instead of search firm for AD, I wonder if they are referring to an actual firm or Wilson will simply have an adviser she will lean on (hopefully Khan).

"I'm still learning about athletic searches, so I don't know what the time frame and process will be."

"It'll be my decision," she said, "in consultation with the search committee. Of course, I'll be working closely with the president, too. He's who I report to. Ultimately, it will be a campus decision."

Very troubling comments

CHICAGO — Larry Lubin believes the University of Illinois' athletic department is a "rocket ship waiting to take off."

"With the background I have in the business world and athletic world, this is a chance to make a difference to get our athletic department getting in the right direction that all of our alumni and state would like to see it go," said Lubin, an Evanston Township High School graduate who now lives in Northbrook. "For an old jock to have a job like this would be a lot of fun."

Chicago is the key

No offense to Lubin, who has done very well for himself and is living the whole North Shore, send your kids to New Trier, nice office in the Loop lifestyle, but is a VP at an life insurance company really someone prepared to become CEO of a highly visible, highly competitive $75+ million dollar "company" like Illinois Athletics?

Just because a candidate has a relationship with Guenther doesn't mean they are Guenther and have the same characteristics as Guenther.

Comparisons are fun, but in the end they really don't mean anything. I have the same view about player comparisons as well.

Lubin is a high risk candidate. Could be great or lack of experience could hurt us. Rick George really has it all as a candidate. I'd go all out for him.
