Remind me, how did Lovie get hired so quickly?

http://diversity.illinois.edu/NewSearchManual/search_guidelines_and_procedures.pdf

I believe this pdf addresses how they can circumvent the waiting/posting period requirement.

Chapter 1 discusses different scenarios for hiring.
Scroll to Chapter 1.2, in the opening paragraph it discusses "unique talents and skills required for the position", which would include the skills Lovie Smith has to be a head football coach, imo.

I know this pdf is from the academic side of the university, but I would bet my life savings there is a SOP nearly identical for the DIA.

Not sure if this is a normal route or not but something to fantasize about nonetheless!

https://flightaware.com/live/flight/FSR511/history/20170312/2130Z/KCMI/KICT

That plane has already been the subject of speculation on here. More than likely not even related to the search. Just for fun though...

Plane went CU -> Wichita -> DC -> CU.

AKA: Josh Whitman -> Gregg Marshall -> John Thompson III -> Back home!!!??

(Note: the above post is filled with utterly worthless speculation based on zero facts)

Real world? Whitman knew the importance of wrapping the Lovie thing up quickly, imparted that upon Tim Killeen and Barb Wilson who took him seriously and cared enough to see that those hurdles would be removed.

Credit to Whitman for the sale, and Killeen and Wilson for treating the DIA in the fashion it deserves.

Going through the motions this time will settle down any feathers that may have rustled. Firing Groce pre-NIT makes this possible with no negative effects on the search.

Competent people are at the helm. Illinois has not always been blessed with that.

Sorry about that! Must not have read that page. But yeah, it's interesting to think about some of the days Whitman has had / has ahead of him.

I agree. I was simply providing a university document, which allows for people to make those decisions. This isn't a big hurdle or hoop to navigate. It's pretty cut/dry if you ask me.

edit: I would say hiring practices are "real world". They're in place for many reasons.

You mean you didn't read ever bit of ridiculous speculation in this thread before posting!!? For shame... ;)

So we think that Marshall would really decide to say "Yeah, come on over and we'll talk about it" the day he found out he had a tough game with Archie in a few days? This preliminary stuff can be done with an iPhone, so I don't think face to face interaction would be plausible at this time with coaches who are still coaching. It just doesn't make sense. After these teams start getting bounced is a different story.

This will be a thread that I frequently look back to when I am bored in 2-3 years. Anybody else ever find themselves doing that on this forum? It's fun to go back and look at old coaching search threads (the coaching search threads that led to Groce and Beckman) just to see how our thinking changed and who was rumored at which times.

I have a feeling I will be doing that with this thread.

Scott Drew is the best available IMO. Power 5 experience, culture of winning, outstanding recruiter, past interest, salary that could be worked out, 46 years old, from Indiana I believe. Just seems like the right fit.

Guys, we can't have it both ways - either the job is really attractive based on its merits, or someone needs to be yearning to have more cornfields in their life to come coach here.

It could be both, or just one of the two. The job IS attractive on its merits to the Right Guy. And even if it's not perceived as such, somebody just might have a corn fetish that needs to be satisfied.

Sounds like the new guy is going to be able to take Illinois Basketball to infinity and beyond.
Scene from the near future: A young recruit is escorted on to the floor at the State Farm.
He looks around in amazement unable to speak. Finally, he whispers, "Is this Heaven?"
Voices comes back from everyone standing nearby: "No, it's Champaign Illinois".

Jeez man, pass that my way.

Jeff Goodman from ESPN was just on Chicago Radio. Said that the thing that hurts the perception of Illinois in the coaching world is that it is thought that you have to get "dirty" to recruit in Chicago right now.

Our dear friends in Chicago Media, making certain no matter what, everything at Illinois gets the worst possible spin it can.

So just to recap. Chicago Media has for 50+ years had two opinions of Illinois:

1) When we're winning, we must be cheating, and

2) If we're not winning, it is because we are irrelevant and cannot recruit anyone.

Shout out to Champaign, where I lived 1960s to 1990s, grew up, attended many games at The Assembly Hall, and played quite a lot of pick-up at Huff, Kenney and Allen.

There's a culture at Baylor, alright.

I've been pondering this, as well, but with Bryce. I just don't think he'd leave Vandy so quickly, though would be pretty awesome if he brought The Rev back home.

I still feel that Loyalty members tend to overrate the basketball job at Illinois at least in the eyes of the coaching fraternity. Yes we are in a talent rich state; however, if you look at recent list of top 100 to play HS basketball we only landed about 18% of them. The Chicago recruiting landscape has a reputation of being dirty, which I feel turns off potential coaches. The state itself is a laughingstock nationally. Champaign/Urbana is not a desired locale and it has been rated as one of the top 5 areas for crime in the state.
With all of that being said, Josh Whitman seams like he could be the type of AD to somehow sell all of this as a top 20 job

There seem to be two prevailing opinions on the Illinois job:

1. That it's a sleeping giant, top 15 job in the country with plenty of resources to be successful at the highest level.
2. That it is overrated and nothing more than a middle-of-the-road P5 job.

IMO the truth is somewhere in the middle.

I've heard this name mentioned. Just too little coaching experience for me. A few years as an NBA assistant, and then four seasons at a very low-level D1 school. Don't get me wrong, he might turn out to be a very good college basketball coach, but I think he needs to prove it at a MAC/A-10 type level before getting a shot at a program like Illinois.

He won't leave Phx. Has successful restaurants & other stuff. If ASU ever comes open again I'd think he'd be the first in line.
