University of Illinois Professor Jay Rosenstein was arrested Monday night for allegedly videotaping a former Chief Illiniwek in a bathroom at State Farm Center.

A Facebook post from Ivan "Alex" Dozier shortly after 11 p.m. said that Rosenstein allegedly followed him into a bathroom during the Illinois-Michigan State game and was using a phone to videotape him while he was relieving himself.

University Professor Arrested at UI Basketball Game Last Night

University of Illinois Professor Jay Rosenstein was arrested Monday night for allegedly videotaping a former Chief Illiniwek portrayer in a bathroom at State Farm Center, though he was later released without being charged.
....
"After finishing my business at the urinal, I turned to find the professor, phone still in hand (and) pointed right at me. I was almost speechless...the man was literally trying to catch me with my pants down. You'd think as many times as I've been harassed by this guy, that I would know how to react by now. Thankfully, my dad was in one of the stalls and heard the confrontation. He emerged from the stall and was able to quickly flag down security," Dozier wrote.

UNBELIEVABLE. It makes no sense to decline pressing charges because the dispute may have been political in nature. The guy did something ILLEGAL. You punish him because he filmed people in the bathroom, not just because he doesn't like the Chief.

I guess there is still opportunity for the University to act to discipline or fire this guy for this unacceptable behavior, but we know they won't do anything.

Just ridiculous he wasn't charged! On what planet does the SA think filming someone in a bathroom is ok? She's also an adjunct professor at the University, on the same faculty staff as Rosenstein. At the very least she should have recused herself from this decision!

The student body has gone absolutely nuts in the 5 years since I've graduated. Like...it's insane. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of students on campus actually supported this move.

"Jay Rosenstein has been released and will not be in court. We are declining to file charges at this time," said State's Attorney Julia Rietz, speaking from a conference in Washington, D.C. "The criminal justice system is not the place to gain an advantage for one side or the other on a public debate."

Only by refusing to press charges, the SA actually IS providing an advantage to one side, Rosnstein's.

Especially in light if what he later said in a statement: "I am a nationally recognized and international award winning documentary filmmaker and investigative journalist. I believe I was wrongfully detained because of my efforts to investigate whether employees of the State Farm Center are taking an active role in facilitating the appearance of the unapproved Chief Illiniwek," Rosenstein said.

I am hard pressed to think how any unauthorized filming in a public restroom can be construed as investigative journalism.

He committed a crime, but feels he is justified.

If I were a victim in this situation, I'd explore filing a Civil Suit

Additionally, there were others in the group being filmed who want charges filed. Why are there voices not heard?

You can contact State's Attorney Julia Rietz' office at 217-384-3733. Would encourage all who feel this way do so to voice outrage over this. Her office is getting an earful today.

Rietz is also an adjunct faculty at the University. There is no way she pursues this.

awesome. so in other words, she is letting her politics get in the way of her diligently doing her job she is being paid to do by the taxpayers.

can you imagine the outcry if this was a "established old time status quo" guy who followed a bunch of ne'er do wells into the john and did the same thing and the DA just let him walk ?????

are two wrongs supposed to make a right here ?

2 of my three kids applied to UI between 2007-2012. Both were accepted. My other son didn't apply because he wouldn't have gotten in.

The two that declined to go, went out of state, as did my third. All ended up paying less and getting a fine degree. The two that went to non B1G schools paid WAY LESS. They never regretted their decision and neither have I .

Its as different a place since 1979-1983 , as night is from day.

what a shame. my, how things change.

I can't say I'm for or against the chief, really, but I can't comprehend how this guy would not be prosecuted for his actions. He clearly committed a crime here.

So, like, hypothetically if the portrayer was female and he followed her into the women's restroom...what are the odds that would result in the same outcome as this? I'm thinking zero.

He's been put on paid leave. That's something, at least.

That 2nd article...

Rosenstein details how Illinois taxpayers are funding pensions for athletic retirees, benefits like health insurance for current athletic employees, and stadium renovations through student fees.

Breaking News: State school and its employees found to be paid for by state taxpayers.

I hope this guy isn't a professor of common sense, because between video taping someone in the bathroom and the above "revelation" he isn't exactly setting the world on fire.

If he were to have a kid in the background going to the bathroom, wouldn't that be possessing child pornography? Make him a registered sex offender.

I wonder whether his phone was taken into evidence. Eh, no I don’t.

Oh, and if, as he calls athletes, jock sniffers had videoed him in the restroom, what would he have said.

I want to avoid a deep discussion about specific funding arms, but student fees =/ taxpayer funded. Whether we should be comfortable about student fees paying for athletic department personnel is another story.

I feel like those aren't new though. I think they were in place back when I was a student about 10 years ago and they weren't exactly high in cost (maybe a couple of bucks).

I mean there were fees for numerous things, most of which I don't recall every using, but I do understand your point.

I will defer to others with more experience and more direct ties, but I think the issue is that the message from the university has been that the athletic department salaries have been "entirely self funded" by revenues from the department. In reality, when you peel back the onion, student fees are assessed, but the bigger issue is that the retirement plans for ex coaches, AD's and staff is heavily supported by state tax payers.

Correct. Fees have been around a long time. States started imposing tuition freezes to quell voters' concerns about cost of college attendance. Universities found loop holes by charging fees outside of the tuition structure, that way they met state mandates but still increased revenue.

Some fees are (or at least were from 05-09) also refundable. There was like a fee refund day and I don’t remember the whole process, but I do remember getting like 100-200 bucks back.
