Enjoying the Ride

As I sit this morning to pen an article about our beloved Fighting Illini, I realize that the passage of time during this part of the year is not marked by moon phases or sun positions. For me, like many others, time is gauged in a lesser known, but certainly understood, standard of measure: "Time until the Next Tip-off".

For Illinois basketball fans, the normal doldrums of winter, with its acidic breath and repulsive grays, have been replaced by an impenetrable sense of orange-covered elation that even the most arctic of airs can not displace.

We as fans have a sacred responsibility which must not be taken lightly. We are required to spend each passing week debating, scheming, second-guessing, ravishing victories and lamenting near defeats. It is mandatory that we profess our loyalty and admire our own genius for being a part of orchestrating such a marvelous season. It's a trying job, but I sense that we are all up for the challenge.

The realization of finality is upon us. If there should happen to be an unseasonable cold front move through the mythical Greek province of Hades that causes a freezing effect, the Illinois basketball season could be over in six games.

When the final whistle blows declaring our 100th season complete, what are you and I as fans left with? There are certain universal answers to this question. There will always be a sense of pride and accomplishment. There will be a feeling of unfinished business that will guarantee our return as fans next season. These are proven, undeniable emotions that we all can expect.

My challenges today of the Illinois basketball faithful are simple ones. I challenge you to reflect upon our season to this point and search out the pleasure that this season has brought you. With a solid foundation built in blissful reflection, my final challenge is the simple but often overlooked recommendation: enjoy the ride. Filed under: Illini Basketball
