Daniel Horton Has Career Night Against Illinois

The Michigan Wolverines—losers of 4 out of their last 5, and with 3 players sitting out (for a variety reasons)—solved Illinois' defense and pulled away at the last minute on solid free throw shooting to win tonight at Ann Arbor, 72-64. Daniel Horton had a career-high 39 points on 13-20 shooting from the field and 8-8 from the line.

Early in the 2nd half Illinois had a great opportunity to extend a 40-33 lead, but Dee Brown turned it over on a fast break and Horton immediately hit a 3 which ignited a huge 14-3 UM run, and the Illini could not recover the lead again. The highlights of the Illini's frustrating play included the inability to consistently work the ball into James Augustine (9-13; 23pts) and Shaun Pruitt (5-7; 10pts), plus zero points from the bench.

Notes
Michigan (11 games) and Tommy Amaker (12 games—some with Seton Hall) snapped big loosing streaks to the Illini with the win. Illinois has given up 70+ points twice this season—both to Michigan. With 5 losses in conference, it's still possible (with help) for Illinois to grab a share of the Big Ten title although highly unlikely with 2 of their final 3 games on the road.
