Illinois improves to 2-0 ahead of the Maui Invitational
Calvin Brock hit a layup with 5 seconds left and Steve Holdren stole the subsequent Hawaii inbounds to give Illinois (2-0) a tough 79-77 victory in Honolulu. Hawaii shot very well and built up a 13-point lead in the 2nd half before Illinois went on a 16-2 run to take the lead. During the Illini run, the Hawaii football team was on a drive to kick a last-second field goal to win at Nevada. In a truly bizarre move by the home operators, the football game was broadcast live on the scoreboard while the basketball game was in play. The home crowd cheered the football team when Trent Meacham hit a three. In any event, Illinois gets out there with a good win ahead of the start of the Maui Invitational Monday night against Arizona St. Chester Frazier had 19 points, Shaun Pruitt had 15 and 7, and freshman Demetri McCamey was impressive with 10 points off the bench.
