A lot of political nonsense surrounded the change of our university's name

Rajin Cajuns
"We prefer to be called the University of Louisiana, LOUISIANA, UL, Ragin' Cajuns, or simply Cajuns. A lot of political nonsense surrounded the change of our University's name from the University of Southwestern Louisiana to the University of Louisiana, Lafayette; first, in 1984 (while I was still a student there) then in 1999, when the change became official after factions from LSU and the LA State Legislature (i.e. one in the SAME) ALLOWED us to make the change only if Northeast Louisiana University also got to change their name to the University of Louisiana, Monroe. Bottom line, we're the largest university in our system (the University of Louisiana System), we have the most graduate degrees, including doctoral programs in the system, and we receive the most Federal research grant money in the System. Just as you call yourselves the University of Illinois, we prefer to be called the University of Louisiana, because THAT is who we are!! My apologies for being quite so chatty on the subject, but I like to let people know how my University progressed from a small, regional college to large, research university over the last 25 or so years."
