Bruce Weber on Stan Simpson

Illinois
Bruce Weber: "He's got a lot more talent and is a lot smarter than we ever anticipated. He's also a lot lazier than we anticipated. If we can get some of the laziness out."

"He has some talent; there's no doubt about it ... He's just got to pick it up a whole 'nother notch school-wise, basketball-wise. It's moving a lot faster than he's ever had to move in his life."

OrangeFever: "If you were Stan Simpson, how would you feel reading that statement by your coach in the college paper? A message like that can and should be conveyed to him or any player privately and, if necessary, in the relatively private context of the team. Some things don't need to be broadcast. Not only does Weber take it public when he shouldn't, he does it in a needlessly harsh way. Instead of declaring him not just "lazy" but "a lot lazier than we anticipated," Weber could simply say that he needs to learn how to work hard to adjust to the demands of the college experience and the college game. Instead, he uses language that rips a player. If I was the player, I'd be pissed, and I'll bet a lot of current and former Illini have been pissed off at the coach for airing things like this publicly.

"This isn't the first time. It's a pattern."
