A student group that supports bringing back Chief Illiniwek has received notice from the University of Illinois that it has infringed on the university's Chief trademarks.
The university sent a letter to the campus group Students for Chief Illiniwek earlier this week asking the students to stop making and selling T-shirts and other items with the Chief Illiniwek trademark, stop using the trademarked logo on the Web site www.studentsforchief.com and stop using the word marks Chief Illiniwek and Chief. "All registered student organizations have the right to free speech, but we certainly do not permit Students for Chief Illiniwek to use university trademarks in a matter that can cause confusion or misunderstanding," said UI spokeswoman Robin Kaler.
