"We played in New York in the preliminary rounds, both in '49 and '51. The Final Four was in Seattle in '49, Minneapolis in '51. It was a good setting," Beach said. "Madison Square Garden, I think they had 18,000 to 20,000 people. It was a neutral crowd. In '51 we played Columbia, the hometown school, and they were undefeated going into the tournament. In the first round we beat them."

UI notebook: Frazier = Douglas

I'll always say Efrem's dunks belong on anyone's all-time highlight reel. If I could ever get the complete sequence of his windmill dunk against Minnesota in 1984 -- rather than the partial tape in existence that doesn't show how he caught Quinn Richardson's inbounds pass behind his head -- I'll slap it on YouTube and prove to the world Efrem's eternal greatness.

Tony Wysinger - UI's single-game assists record-holder (16), now assistant AD and head coach at Illinois Central College.

Doug Altenberger - Three-time All-Big Ten guard, now president of Charter National Bank and Trust in Chicago area.

Efrem Winters - UI's ninth-leading career scorer, now with Chicago's Pepper Construction.

Bruce Douglas - 1983-84 co-MVP, now associate minister at Broadview Missionary Baptist Church and works with Exelon/ComEd in Chicago area.

'84 Illini: Where Are They Now

"Bruce [Douglas] talked about being a great teammate, being a great leader, leaving it on the court,'' Illinois coach Bruce Weber said. "You can't focus on wins, losses and records. You have to play basketball, then leave a legacy. He's truly done that, not only here but in his life. The guys reacted pretty well.''
