Spartans, Illini give critics ammunition

The 1-2 seeds, Michigan State and Illinois, lost by 12 and 10 points respectively, but if you were watching, the Conseco outcomes weren't nearly that close.

Tom Izzo's championship squad of erratic shooters, who hoped to ride powerhouse rebounding into a No. 1 NCAA seed, attempted 24 more field goals (71 to 47) than Ohio State but trailed by 17 before closing to 82-70. The Spartans' stern defense took a spanking.

And Illinois, wearing orange against Purdue's black in a Halloween-like debacle, revisited the embarrassments suffered at Minnesota (36 points) and against Penn State at home (33).
