Linebacker Ian Thomas hopes speed snags him spot as Illini starter

Making a strong case for a starting spot at middle linebacker or strongside linebacker, the 6-foot, 228-pound Thomas is one of a half dozen athletic linebackers trying to play their way into a starting position during spring football practice.
"We're all kind of fast-twitch guys,'' Thomas said. "I feel like we can all get to the ball. That's where the defense is going to build. They're testing us a lot right now, seeing who plays well with whom, who plays well at what positions. They're trying things out now.
