Mom and Dad Scheelhaase along for the ride

When quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase signed a letter of intent to play football at Illinois last winter, it was a package deal. His mother and father were also coming along for the ride.

The Kansas City Star metro player of the year and one of the top seven quarterbacks nationally in the class of 2009, Scheelhaase chose the Illini over Oklahoma, Missouri and Iowa. Then his parents followed their only child to college, selling their Overland Park, Kan., condo and moving to town earlier this month.

"We want to be with our son,'' said Scheelhaase's father, Nate Creer, a three-year starting defensive back at Iowa and the team's defensive MVP when the Hawkeyes won the Big Ten title in 1985. "We've been with him since day one. We always told him during the recruiting process that distance wasn't going to be a factor.
