Where did bus take a detour?

I'm not sure what is worse, the fact that the Illini football coaches and players clearly don't know what made them gag up a hairball the size of the Boody water tower in the season opener, or that we won't know if they're capable of playing at a much higher level for nearly three weeks.

We will not learn a great deal from the home opener Saturday night against Illinois State (6 p.m., Big Ten Network).

No offense to our Redbird friends, but they were just as awful as the Illini in their opening loss at Eastern Illinois. At least the Redbirds have an excuse. Coaching changes usually signal a period of turmoil and transition.
