If Phase 2 ever materializes, perhaps we'll see the other Illini bookend, Dick Butkus, in a dominating stance somewhere on the other side. That's only fair. While Red Grange was recognized by ESPN as the nation's greatest collegiate football player, Butkus is surely the most recognizable defender in the history of the sport. They stand clearly above all others, and are the only Illini gridders with their numbers retired here.
