Illinois freshmen adjusting to college game

"In high school, D.J. and I could get a shot any time," Paul said. "If we miss in there, we know we're going to get more, but if you miss that many shots (in college), you know you're probably going to be on the bench."

Some of the differences are obvious. The players are bigger and closer to them in athletic ability, but something Richardson did not anticipate was the mental aspect of a drive. Defenders, he said, are smarter and cut off more options at this level.

"They are smarter players," Richardson said. "It's bigger and more crowded when you get inside the lane because all coaches in college preach, 'Protect the lane. Don't let the guards inside the lane.' "
