"If we keep playing like that, we'll get a win at Michigan," said Illini guard Demetri McCamey, who tied Tony Wysinger's 23-year-old school record with 16 assists.
Illinois fell to 17-10 overall and 9-5 in the Big Ten before playing at Michigan (13-13, 6-8) on Tuesday (6 p.m., ESPN) in the first of back-to-back must-win games. There was disappointment from falling for a second straight game despite leading by seven points in the first half of a contest that had 10 lead changes and seven ties, but Illinois just wanted to play its best basketball down the stretch.
