Minnesota takes bite out of Illini's NCAA tourney hopes

The Illini had won 21 of the last 22 meetings with Minnesota. Trailing by 15 with 9:30 left, the crowd booed the home team. On a day when top-ranked Kansas and No. 2 Kentucky fell, the Illini had much more to lose.

"There really is no explanation," said Illini forward Bill Cole, who scored all of his career high 15 points in the second half on five 3-pointers. "We have to have our backs against the wall. It's getting close to be that special time in March. We gave ourselves a chance a couple weeks ago.

"Now we're not really taking advantage of what we did. It's sad."
