Similar to Stony Brook, Kent State entered its league tournament with a high seed and hopes of earning an automatic bid in the NCAA tournament. But Ohio upset Kent State 81-64 in the MAC tournament, sending the Golden Flashes to the NIT. "We couldn't have won any respectable Division III conference game that day," coach Geno Ford said. Don't let one forgettable game fool you: Kent State has won 14 of 16 games and beat a solid Tulsa team in the first round of the NIT. "One of our best performances of the year," Ford said. Their driving force is Chris Singletary, a physical guard out of Chicago Farragut. "I think (Demetri) McCamey, he's the calming force for their team," Ford said. "What he does for them is what Singletary does for us."
