Dave Telep: Let me tell you how recruiting has changed since 1997

The competitive edge of most players has been blunted. With so many "big" TV games, an increased number of high school games and a national AAU schedule, it's almost impossible to ask kids to be competitive each time they step out on the court. There's always a "next big game" to be played. Back in the day, keeping that competitive edge razor sharp seemed more prevalent and a lot easier. Fewer times in the spotlight made the spotlight hotter and brighter.
Entitlement (a word I can't stand) has seeped into our game. Because kids now frequent "national" camps as middle schoolers, they expect more from the game. They're told how good they are at an earlier age and expect high school to be a parade of praise being heaped on them as if they've already arrived.
