Illini football looks to finish with flourish at Fresno

They seemed destined for the Texas Bowl in Houston, but a win couldn't hurt as Illinois lobbies for a bowl with more prestige, such as the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla. A win would give Illinois an identical overall record with Iowa, Penn State, Michigan and Northwestern. Penn State can sell Joe Paterno. Michigan has those helmets. Iowa travels well.

Illinois has an offense that averaged 46.8 points over the last five games. The Illini averaged 32.9 points through 11 games, just ahead of the school record of 32.5 set by the Sugar Bowl team in 2001. Even if the Illini can't change their bowl destination, they could into bowl practice with some momentum.

"You want to build momentum," Scheelhaase said. "When you stack wins on top of each other, you build confidence in yourself and what you're able to do as a team. If we win that game up in Wrigley and make (a successful) trip to California, you gain confidence going into bowl season."
