'Billy Burner' Cole scores hustle points for Illini
January 5, 2011 8:41 PM
Illinois senior forward Bill Cole always believed in himself.
He got that from his father, Terry, a former Illini defensive end. Terry Cole learned that brand of mental toughness from Tom Peeler, the legendary Richwoods High School coach who passed it down to a generation of football players.
It's paying off for No. 20 Illinois heading into a Big Ten basketball game against Northwestern on Thursday. A two-time Journal Star big-school basketball player of the year at Richwoods, Bill Cole earned minutes last season because of his defense and hustle. This season, his scoring is warming up on the Matto hustle chart, and he's also heating up from the 3-point line, where Cole is 11-for-16 over the last five games.
