Minus guard play, Illini can't keep up

The guards of McCamey, D.J. Richardson and Brandon Paul combined to go 6 for 28 shooting. They also combined for eight assists and five turnovers. That Illinois was able to take this game into the final seconds is either a miracle or a testament to the play of others.

One of those was Jereme Richmond, who has bounced back from his "period of reflection" with two very strong games. Saturday he had a career-best 18 points and he was a demon around the basket. That kid is clever. He knows how to use the rim to reverse and fend off defenders. Very, very resourceful. And he grabbed 10 rebounds.

Mike Davis had 11 points and 7 rebounds and Mike Tisdale finished with 15 points and 4 rebounds. But the guard play was weak and Illinois paid for it.
