Because when I look at those three consecutive bowl seasons, I can't get past the fact that Northwestern played the weakest non-conference schedule in the country to get there. Their FBS non-conference opponents over those three years were 27-81. Illinois' FBS non-conference opponents, you ask? Oh, they were 80-28.
