Whitney Mercilus shrugs off loss of fingertip

After losing the tip of his left index finger in a weight room accident just before the spring game, Mercilus can laugh about it now in the days leading up to the season opener against Arkansas State on Saturday (2:30 p.m., BTN) at Memorial Stadium.
"It's not really a big deal," the junior said. "I was joking about it as soon as it happened."
Mercilus' finger is gone somewhere around that smallest knuckle, smashed by 405 pounds when he wasn't able to react quickly enough when another lifter brought down a barbell on his hand.
