Whitney the Mercilus

I tweeted this yesterday, but at this point, he has to be our first 1st-team All American since Martin O'Donnell. With 8.5 sacks through 6 games, he not only has more sacks than any other FBS player, he's also on pace to break Simeon Rice's Illini record for sacks in a single season (a record that I thought would never even be approached). He's played 6 games, and he's currently 11th on the Illini single-season sacks list. 5 players are tied for 6th with 9 sacks in one season, so with his next sack, Mercilus will be 5th on the single season list.

Big Ten Defensive player of the mid-year: Whitney Mercilus, Illinois
Mercilus has been, well, merciless in the Illini's surprising 6-0 start. He leads all FBS players with 8.5 sacks and is fifth with 10.5 tackles for loss. He had four tackles for loss and three sacks in Saturday's 41-20 victory over Indiana.
