After trailing 37-35, the Illini blew the game open with a 38-6 run. Rebounding was an issue early, when the the Illini trailed 16-12 on the boards at halftime but finished with a 34-27 advantage. Freshman Mike Shaw led the Illini with eight.
Turnovers, expected to be a problem, weren't. The Illini lost only four in each half. Freshman point guard Tracy Abrams tallied five assists without a turnover.
