Just how crucial was football success at Penn State? How important was ensuring that Paterno's legacy remained as pristine as ever across nearly five decades and two national titles?
In the absence of anything else that makes sense, we can only assume those questions are part of the story here, part of the collective consciousness that occurred in 2002 when a graduate assistant on Penn State's football team allegedly witnessed former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky subjecting a 10-year-old boy to sexual intercourse in the Penn State football locker room and everyone who had the power to do something chose instead to do very little.
