Tim Beckman named new chief for Illini

Over the past decade, Toledo has averaged the second best recruiting class in the MAC. Compare that with the fact that Illinois has middle of the road talent for the Big 10, and you realize that Beckman will be playing more games with equivalent and inferior talent than he was at Toledo. His record at Toledo with inferior talent should be somewhat of a concern..
The bottom line is that Tim Beckman is still somewhat of an unknown. While he does have some great mentors, has been a part of some very solid teams, and certainly had the Toledo program headed in the right direction, we still have concerns looking at the numbers above..
We felt like Illinois had a great opportunity to swing for the fences on this hire and based on the observable data, we think they probably hit a single or a double on this one. They could have done a lot, lot worse, but they also could have done a little better.
