Basketball is new Illini coach Groce's life
April 1, 2012 12:47 PM
New Illinois coach was consumed with the sport, statistics from a young age
Two-and-a-half hours into a four-hour trip toward a weekend camping excursion, Larry Groce had listened to enough of young son John's rattling off every basketball statistic imaginable, finally pleading for a change of subject.
"I'm not kidding you, it got quiet for the next hour," he said. "He couldn't talk."
For as long as Larry Groce can remember, his son's favorite topic -- and sometimes only topic -- has been basketball.
