John Groce voted The Dispatch's Men's Ohio College Basketball Coach of the Year

Peers in the state voted him as The Dispatch Men's Ohio College Basketball Coach of the Year over mentor Thad Matta of Ohio State.

The great season led Illinois to hire Groce, 40, immediately after the season. Like he did at Ohio, Groce is taking a brick-by-brick approach to bringing the Illini back to national prominence.

"We're moving fast and furious here," he said. "I like assistant coaches and players who grind and attack. I don't ever want to have a team that reacts. I probably get that from my parents and the coaches I've played and worked under. My dad (Larry) always says there are no free lunches in life. Coach Matta always says you have to have aggressive patience. He means you want it now, but have to work at it hard and long to get results. I just try to be true to myself."
