Illinois' running game critical to its success

No one knows what's going to happen this year. On the positive side, though, the Illini have three promising young backs -- sophomores Donovonn Young and Josh Ferguson and true freshman Dami Ayoola -- who have been encouraging in training camp. They also have a mobile quarterback in Nate Scheelhaase, who has rushed for nearly 1,500 yards the last two years.
If the offensive line can do its job -- a big if -- the running game will have a chance.
"Obviously, we're not going to come off the ball and roll everybody over," said co-offensive coordinator Chris Beatty, who will call the plays. "But at the same time, I feel good about us running the ball. We've got enough ways to try and deal with the different things the defense gives us and try to give them enough looks to where they have some issues, too."
