Sun Devils boast multiple ties to Illinois

Shortly after Ron West took his current job as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Arizona State, he received a text from a former pupil, Illinois senior defensive end Michael Buchanan.
"He texted me and congratulated me, but he said 'I'm sorry, coach, but I've got to come to the desert and whoop you on September 8th,'" West recalls.
West coached Buchanan, a second-team All-Big Ten performer, the past two seasons while working for Ron Zook, who was fired after last season.
"I texted him back and said, 'Mikey, I know you can wish all you want to wish, but, son, you'll melt in the desert in the fourth quarter,'" West said. "So we still go back and forth a little bit, but I haven't texted him in a while."
